Carlos Sainz's Monaco Podium "doesn't taste as good" following eventful weekend for Ferrari

Carlos Sainz said his first podium this season at the Monaco Grand Prix “doesn’t taste as good” after a dramatic weekend for Ferrari.

The Ferrari driver had a comfortable race spending most of it in second place with no real pressure from any other driver other than Mercedes driver, Valteri Bottas, who retired from the race after his first stint with a damaged wheelnut.

Post-race, Carlos said; “If you would have told me before coming to Monaco, I would finish second I would definitely have taken it.

“It’s just the circumstances of the weekend- having Charles on pole, me missing out in qualifying yesterday on a good lap – it just maybe doesn’t taste as good as it should but I’m sure when I reflect back on the weekend, I will be very happy and proud of the weekend.”

It’s a weekend of what could have been. With Leclerc winning pole, the potential for both Ferrari’s to have a strong result here was taken away from them and could be crucial in the constructors standings.

When asked about the disappointment ahead of the race, Carlos said; “When you see the other car not starting from pole, all of a sudden the responsibility obviously falls to you to salvage a bit of the weekend.

“It was all about getting the start right and then around the pit stops there was a lot of traffic and we were lapping the cars very quickly and obviously Valteri had the pit stop but eve without that I was feeling really good with the car today and I felt like the team at least deserved a podium this weekend.”

A weekend full of highs and lows for the Scuderia, a pole position lost but a first podium in Ferrari red for Carlos Sainz.
