The same percentage of women and men were given bonuses at Aston Villa

Aston Villa are the only major football club in the West midlands where the percentage of men and women who earned a bonus is identical.

The figure for men and women who earned a bonus at Villa was 14.9%. No other Premier league or English Football League club in the region recorded an equal bonus from 2021 to 2022.

West Bromwich Albion were the only club to have a higher percentage of women earning a bonus compared to men. 78.6% of female employees at Albion were given a bonus from 2021 to 2022, whereas 57.7% of male employees who earned a bonus.

Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Walsall, all recorded a lower percentage of women than men who earned a bonus within the timeframe.

Why is the percentage for men and women the same?

Villa’s management organisation chart lists four of its senior management staff as being female, out of the nine names listed as part of its senior staff.

That means 44% of women make up Villa’s management team, which is one of the reasons why the bonus percentage was higher for women last year, as the percentage would be easily swayed due to lower number of female to male employees.

Alisha Lehmann is rumoured to be the highest earner in the Villa women’s team. The 23-year-old was reported to be earning a base salary of £174,000 per week. This means that Lehmann had a higher base salary than any player on the men’s team from 2021 to 2022.

Lehmann also has a big social media following and is often seen in advertisements for her partnerships with Adidas, EA Sports, and PlayStation.

Villa forward Danny Ings was reported to have highest base salary in the men’s team last season, earning £120,000 per week.

This shows that whilst the percentage for bonuses earned at Villa was identical last season, the number of men who earned bonuses was larger than the number of women, due to more men than women employed at the club.
